Moving into a new home is exciting — but let’s be honest, it can also feel completely overwhelming. You finally have a fresh canvas, but where do you even start? Paint? Furniture? Pinterest spirals at midnight?

Before you start decorating in chaos, take a deep breath. I’m sharing my tried-and-true steps to help you create a plan, find your style, and design a home that feels cohesive, peaceful, and uniquely you.

1. Start with a Plan (Not Panic!)

The biggest mistake I see new homeowners make is jumping straight into buying decor before they have a clear direction. Slow down and start with a plan.

Ask yourself:

  • Which rooms do we actually use the most right now?
  • What’s not working in this space?
  • What are my priorities (comfort, storage, beauty, or all three)?

By mapping out your needs before buying anything, you’ll save time, money, and frustration. Your goal isn’t perfection on day one — it’s progress with purpose.

Pro Tip: Start with one or two high-impact spaces, like your living room or entryway. Once those feel good, the rest of your home will start to fall into place.

2. Pinterest Is Your New BFF

Pinterest is one of the best tools for finding your design voice. Instead of scrolling randomly, use it intentionally:

  1. Create a board for your home.
  2. Pin anything that catches your eye — no overthinking.
  3. Once you have about 30–40 pins, look for patterns.

Do you notice lots of white walls and wood tones? Maybe you’re drawn to moody, dramatic colors? Clean lines or cozy layers?

Those patterns reveal your true style. It’s like taking a personality quiz, but for your house.

3. How to Create a Cohesive Home Vision Before You Buy a Single Thing

Once you have an idea of your style, it’s time to make sure your rooms tell the same story.

When I moved into my home, I created a simple slideshow with photos of each room design side by side. Seeing them together helped me check that the colors, finishes, and moods flowed throughout the house.

That visual consistency made such a difference — suddenly my home felt calm, not cluttered.

If this part feels tricky, don’t worry — this is one of my favorite steps to help clients with! I often create custom mood boards that help them see the full picture before buying anything. It’s amazing how much more confident you’ll feel once you can visualize your plan. Here is an example of a mood board for a room I have made for my clients:

4. Ask These 5 Questions Before Starting Any Design Project

Before you start choosing paint or furniture, pause and ask yourself these five questions:

  1. Who will use this space most often?
  2. How do I want it to feel when I walk in?
  3. What pieces must stay, and what can go?
  4. What’s my budget and timeline?
  5. What’s one small change I can make right now?

Design should always serve your life — not the other way around. These questions will help you stay grounded and intentional throughout the process.

5. Mix Old and New for a Collected, Comfortable Look

Don’t feel pressured to replace everything at once! Mixing old and new is what gives your home soul.

Pair your grandmother’s dresser with a sleek new mirror. Combine a modern sofa with vintage art. These contrasts bring warmth and character that store-bought sets simply can’t match.

A home that feels “collected over time” always looks more natural, layered, and loved.

6. Lighting 101: The Unsung Hero of Good Design

Lighting can make or break your design — it’s the secret ingredient that gives your home depth and life.

Here’s the golden rule: every room needs three layers of light.

  • Ambient light (your overhead lighting)
  • Task light (lamps or sconces for reading, cooking, etc.)
  • Accent light (candles, under-cabinet lights, or art lighting for mood)

When you mix these layers, your space instantly feels more inviting and finished.

7. Simple Styling Tricks to Make Your Home Feel Finished

Once your big pieces are in place, the magic happens in the details. Try these stylist-approved tricks:

  • Art placement: Hang pieces at eye level, not too high.
  • Scale: Use one large statement piece instead of several tiny ones.
  • Texture: Mix wood, metal, glass, and soft textiles for balance.
  • Greenery: Add life with plants or branches, even faux ones.

You’ll be amazed how these small tweaks can turn an ordinary space into something you love coming home to.

Final Thoughts

Designing your new home should feel joyful, not stressful. Start small, stay intentional, and remember — your home doesn’t have to be finished to be beautiful.

If you need help creating a cohesive plan or visualizing your dream home, that’s exactly what I love to do. Whether it’s a single-room design board or a full-home plan, I can help you create a home that tells your story.
